Computer Problems and Maintenance

System freezes can be frustrating. Many computer troubles are easy to remedy as long as the solution is known. A problem can be caused because the power was not turned on, or the power cables are not securely connected. The idea is not to panic nor begin to press keys that may make matters worse. Many big computer problems are caused as a direct result of human error.

System "freezes" causing you to get no response to mouse or keyboard actions is a very common problem amongst computer users. The problem can be as simple as having too many application windows open at one time. Closing the applications that you are not using can provide a solution. If all else fails hold down the CTRL and ALT keys simultaneously while pressing delete.

Voltage spikes, power outages or burnouts can cause your computer to behave erratically. In certain situations a surge suppressor installed between the power outlet and system power cord can be the preventative solution.

Trouble installing new equipment such as scanners, or printers can occur for simple reasons. Windows will not always recognize new hardware. The driver disk that comes with the new hardware should be used to install it. The driver is a system file that tells windows how to communicate with your computer. If you still can't seem to get it to work you can call your hardware's manufacturer for more information.

Maintenance

  • Data recovery is always possible even when voltage spikes, power outages or burnouts have occured.Keep the area around your computer clean and free from dust and contaminants. Dust and dirt can clog fans, prevent good ventilation and in some cases cause short circuits. Food and drink should never be around the computer. Spills can be very harmful.
  • When cleaning the outside of the computer use a damp cloth, there are keyboard wipes that can be purchased at any computer or office supply store. Mouse rollers should be cleaned using a swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

Install anti-virus software, but more importantly keep it updated.

Defragment your hard drive. As time passes the files on your hard drive get scattered all over the place and this slows down access to the drive. Disk defragmentation should be run at least monthly depending on how often the computer is used.

Scan disc - A computer is a delicate piece of equipment, if bumped or shut down abruptly physical errors can occur. The hard disc floats on a cushion of air between the head and the disk; if the computer is bumped or shut down abruptly the head can come into contact with the surface of the disc, scratching the disk causing damage and data loss. Scan disc should be applied once a week after about thirty hours of internet time or fifty hours of computer time.

Back up files regularly. If you do not have back up files when you endure hard drive failure you will lose personal important information. If files are lost, and you have not backed up information, the only other way to accomplish data recovery is to get the help of a data recovery specialist.
